The long forecasted tolling of the A22 has arrived, and not without its problems. What most people are interested in is the bottom line and the only rate I know at this point in time is from Faro airport to Vila Real which is €5.31 . There is no facility to pay along the way , so you have to wait 48 hours for it to register, then you have 5 days to pay before penalty
My first experience was travelling the above mentioned route, then going to Vila Real pay booth (a little sweet shop beside petrol station on marina), only to find that the previous driver of the rented car had not paid their toll. Think about it , if you travel back to airport and there is a 48 hour waiting period before it registers, how can you be expected to pay. You could arrange with some friends (residents) to do it or wait and see if it arrives in the post to your home address, details of your address will be sought from the car rental company.
